Why is there a need for an Vector Drawing Educational Software
“We have been looking around for
a drawing software for a long time, one that is suitable for use by all
the pupils at our school”
Computers and ICT are now more
and more a part of the mainstream of everyone’s life, at home as well as
at school and in the workplace. The need for children to receive an
adequate practical education in how to use them is becoming urgent and
pressing. ICT is now a vital part of the curriculum, because IT skills
are necessary before pupils can gain access to resources on the Internet
and on CD to help their study in all other subjects.
Acquiring skills in making and
using computer graphics is now considered so important that pupils are
now expected to learn to use a drawing program to make images and visual
models as part of normal Primary education. The Graphical Modelling Unit
5A of the QCA document for Information Technology requires pupils to use
an object-based drawing package, such as aspexDraw. (An object
based package is in contrast to a painting package which is pixel-based
where only pixels rather than objects can be re-coloured or moved)
A paint package has limitations
due to the fact that the image is described and constructed from tiny
pixels rather like the dots in a newspaper picture. As you enlarge a
painted image, it becomes fuzzy or “pixellated” , straight lines become
like staircases and curves become angular.
Object-based drawing software
does not have this limitation. As you enlarge an object-based image, it
stays sharp and its shape does not change. You can manipulate any
element of your drawing separately from any other part of the drawing,
copying, stretching, resizing, turning and repositioning it. This is a
very flexible and logical way to construct images and removes much of
the frustration students may feel when using a painting package.
In the world of
educational
software there has been a scarcity of suitable object-based drawing
packages for use in schools. aspexDraw was developed to address this
need.
