What is aspexDraw?

aspexDraw is an excellent vector drawing software for PC’s.

It is really easy to use, great for primary schools and powerful enough to be an ideal choice of drawing program in secondary schools.

Download aspex Draw for free

and try it out for yourself,

the program will work on PC Windows.

Some of the clipart available in aspexDraw

Aspex Draw is an object-based, or vector drawing software, which means that each shape you draw on the screen is a discreet, separate object. You can manipulate and alter it in a number of ways. An object can be resized, copied, moved around the screen, rotated through 90 degrees or freely, clockwise or anticlockwise, undo, redo, group, align and much more. You can make a mirror image of the object, bring it to the front or put it to the back and group it with other objects.

Draw simple straight lines, crooked lines or closed shapes with the same tool, or curved lines, circles, ellipses, squares and rectangles and lots of other shapes. There are tools to fill shapes and lines with colours and graded colours, have thicker or thinner lines, or no lines at all, they can be dashed and dotted and there are plenty of editing tools.

Edit pictures with cut, copy, paste, undo, redo, rotate, resize, move, import.  See the full list of editing and features.

Drawing Pictures

1. A simple line drawing

2. With windows added made

from rectangles

3. A backdrop made from colour filled rectangles and circles, with a couple of curves introduced

4. The completed house is placed over the backdrop which has been 'sent to the back'

1. Plan view of a netball court made from lines and curves

2. The plan view is grouped and then converted to isometric

3. Players are dragged on to the court from the clipart window

4. ... and a couple of basketball nets

Autoshapes

aspexDraw contains lots of auto shapes to aid in the creation of your drawings. Most of the

shapes are adjustable, the regular polygon for example shape can be adjusted to have

any number of sides to make a triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon etc

... more

A unique and very useful library of clipart

These items were made in aspexDraw to form part of the clipart set. The 'exploded' images demonstrate how a picture is made from separate objects.

The vector clipart comprises 2D Plan View and 3D Views of different objects, chairs, tables, bathroom furniture, playground and classroom items.

Acorn Draw Files

Do you have a stock of teaching resources which are being wasted because they are in the Acorn format? Transfer them to

the PC platform using aspexDraw which supports most Acorn Drawfiles, and you can continue to make good use of them.

Photographs and other images

You can set an option to display all your photo's and drag them on to the picture

Drag photos on to the picture, scale them and rotate them, add text ... ... to create your own holiday collage. Or just print out your favourite holiday snap!

Here's a neat project to design a new shop front. Load in a photograph of the original shop...

... create a new shop front design with

drawings and text ...

... then lay the new design on top of

the original photograph

apsexDraw editing and other features

The text below uses the term 'object' to define any item on the screen; this might be a line, a shape, an image or a group of all these.
General:

Undo

Redo

Select All

Cut

Copy / Paste

These standard functions are complemented by an unlimited undo / redo facility.

Drawing tools: Open Line / Closed Line One can draw a single line, or draw a series of lines where the end joins the beginning to form a closed shape.
Open Curve / Closed Curve Draw a single curve or a series of curves where the end joins the beginning to form a closed shape.
Freehand Draw a freehand line using the mouse. What actually happens is that draw is generating string of very short lines joined together.
Circle / Ellipse Draw an ellipse, or keep the ctrl button pressed to draw a perfect circle.
Square / Rectangle Draw a rectangle, or keep the ctrl button pressed to draw a perfect square.

Drawing aids: Square and Isometric grids A standard square grid is supplied together with an isometric grid, great for designing speudo 3D pictures, and especially with the aspexDraw clipart.
Align objects Group any number of objects together and align them horizontally, vertically, equidistantly, centre, left, right, top and bottom.
Merge Merging objects causes the overlapping parts to cancel out. So if square with a circle on it is merged, the result with be a square shape with a hole in it.

Useful too for joining 'pipes' together smoothly. A pipe can be made using degrees of line thickness combined with graded line colour.

Primary and sec toolbar Choose to have larger toolbar buttons of your choice.
Clipart There is plenty of 2D plan view and 3D clipart to drag onto the screen to complement your drawing.

Drawing page Portrait / Landscape Display the drawing screen in landscape of portrait view.
Multiple pages Display multiple pages on the screen using intuitive controls on the page.

Line Styles: Solid Draw an uninterrupted line.
  Dotted  Draw a dotted line.
Dashed Draw a selection of dashed lines.
Custom Make your own with a limited edit facility.
End caps and joins End caps and joins can be made round, mitred or bevelled.

Text: Text Place text anywhere on your picture and change the fonts, size and colour.
Type text as objects Uses line and curved objects to draw text.
Convert text to path So that text can be edited like any other object.
RTF text editing Simple text editing like in a word processor.

Objects can be: Selected 1. The screen is comprised of thousands of pixels. An object will become selected when any pixel on that object is clicked. For example, if the screen was covered with a confusing array of lines it is easy to select the desired line by accurately clicking the mouse on any part of the desired line.

2. Drag the mouse over a picture, and any objects that it touches will become selected.

3. Set the option 'inclusive selection' to select only those objects enclosed by the mouse bounding box.

When an object is selected, a bounding box will appear with grab handles attached to it for scaling and rotating the object.

Moved Press the mouse over an object and move the object to another part of the screen. aspexDraw makes an educated guess as to whether you are trying to move the object or select it!

In other words one can move an object without it being cluttered with a bounding box.

Rotated Any selected object can be rotated by a set amount using a menu, by a specified amount using keyboard input, or freely using the mouse.
Scaled Apply scaling using the the mouse to drag grab handles on the selected object, or type an amount to scale it in both X and/or Y planes.
Flipped A menu option enables you to 'flip' an object, or create a mirror image in the vertical plane.
Mirror Make a mirror image of the object.
Grouped Group several objects together to form a single object.
Brought to front Bring a selected object to the front of the picture.
Put to back Send a selected object to the back f the picture.
Graded When two objects with the same number of points are grouped together, draw will generate or morph a series of shapes between them which gradually change from the size, shape and colour one to the size, shape, and colour of the other.
Locked Lock a shape into position, particularly useful for backgrounds and worksheets.
Cloned Setting an object with the clone effect enables one to drag unlimited clones from that object.  For example, when make a classroom, place a chair on the screen and set it to clone; then while designing the classroom one can drag more chairs into the room at any time.

Editing objects: Add points to line A line is normally drawn as a single line suspended between two 'points'. For example, draw a horizontal line and edit mode add a third point near the centre of the line and drag the point up or down to form a V shape.
Add points to curve Add points to a curve to help make a more complex shape, a leaf for example. The beach scene illustrated above uses lots of curves with points added.
Line to curve Convert the line on one side of a square to a curve and edit it to make an arch.
Curve to line ie; Start with a circle, convert a segment from curve to line to make a pacman

Effects include: Graduated colour fill Apply graduated colour fill, or shading, to your object using standard fills, or design your own using a simple editor.
Graduated line fill Apply graduated line colour fill, or shading, to your object using standard fills, or design your own using a simple editor.
Bend Encloses your object within a square bounding box with a grab handle in each corner.  Drag the grab handles to distort or bend the object; great for transforming a rectangular image to place on to an object drawn in perspective for example.
Isometric converter Very useful for when design a room with the clipart; quickly generate floor shapes from rectangles, or left and right hand walls.
Type text as object This editor creates 'text line drawings' from the text on your keyboard.

Autoshapes: Polygons etc aspexDraw contains lots of autoshapes to aid the creation of drawings, see autoshapes for more.

aspexDraw is an easy to use Vector Drawing Program supporting graphics modelling in ICT. It also links easily to the Art & Design, as well as Shape and Space aspects of Mathematics in the National Curriculum.

Can young children use aspexDraw?

aspexDraw is easy for children of all ages to use. It has a simple toolbar option for very young children and worksheets designed to help them take their first steps in ICT.

aspexDraw in ICT

Being a vector, object-based program, each shape you draw in aspexDraw is a separate object. Pupils learn new skills as they move, edit, manipulate and rotate computer graphics to make a picture or design. Also included within the program are basic ICT worksheets.

aspexDraw in Mathematics

aspexDraw helps pupils explore Shapes and their properties. Drawings are made from lines, curves, rectangles, ellipses, clipart, images and text. There are also Square and Isometric Grids to help you create 2D and 3D drawings. Scales and units of measurement can be altered.

aspexDraw for Art and Design

aspexDraw is the easy-to-use drawing program children use to create images. You can draw pictures or diagrams and also construct plans using Isometric or Square Grids with units of measurement.

As well as being very handy for Art and Design, it helps with Graphics Modelling in ICT and as a way for pupils to explore the Shape and Space strand of Maths.

How easy is it to learn?
Very simple indeed. AspexDraw has a short manual as well as an on-screen help manual, but they are not often needed.
