SpexClassic in Mathematics
|
|
|
 |
Spex is a simple software
giving young students experience of using maths in a very practical
situation.
By designing a room on the screen students get to grips with
dimensions, money and budgets.
A simple spreadsheet provides a bridge to this more abstract subject
in a familiar real life context.
|
|
Maths Skills and Concepts
Spex helps pupils grasp 3D spatial concepts in a practical setting,
by moving and rotating items of furniture and seeing how they relate to
each other.
Spex makes the relationship between plan view and 3D view easy to
understand and gives pupils good practice in using words for shapes,
space and dimensions, scale, proportion and symmetry. It has a budget
facility which helps pupils to learn about budgeting and handling money. |

 |
|
Spreadsheet Modelling
Spreadsheet modelling is quite an abstract concept to grasp,
especially for young pupils. Spex provides a valuable bridge to this
area of modelling with a simple built-in spreadsheet display.
The Spex spreadsheet displays the names of the furniture used in the
design together with prices and the total cost. When items of furniture
are added or removed from the design this is reflected in the
spreadsheet. |
 |
|
2D
and 3D space.
Pupils learn
about the relationship between 2D plans and 3D pictures, and see how
items of furniture relate spatially in 2D and 3D.
|
 |
|
Graphs.
There are graphs and charts
too, including 2D and 3D bar graphs, line graph and a pie chart display
the items and costs.
|
 |
|
Managing money.
Spex+ has a
simple introductory spreadsheet. It also has a budget facility so pupils
learn to take account of the prices of furniture, and work out what they
can afford.

|
What about younger children?
Spex is a proven asset in the hands of younger children and they love
using the program. The software is also a common choice among Special
Needs schools.
|
|
How easy is it to learn?
No problem! Pupils already know how to use Spex. It seems that no
matter what the skill of the user, Spex is a winner in the classroom!
